What is the Experimental Aircraft Association?
What is the Experimental Aircraft Association?
What is EXAL? Founded in 1968, the Experimental Aircraft League.
Its purpose is the popularization and research of homebuilt aircraft, research aircraft, and sports aircraft.
Our mission is to design spaces that stand the test of time, enhancing the way people live, work, and interact with their environments.
Organization

The President, Vice President, and Directors form the core of the operations, supported by 120 club members (from 13 clubs nationwide) and representatives from the National Gyroplane Liaison Committee (6 regions).
The duties of the Directors include providing technical advice on aircraft built by members and others, evaluating safety, conducting safety awareness activities, liaising with the Japan Aeronautic Association, attending the FAI Amateur-Built Aircraft Committee, and presenting the Miyahara Award.

Activity Track Record
Explore Our Architectural Design Gallery
Our current primary activities include providing technical guidance and safety evaluations for aircraft built and assembled by our members, acting as an agent for test flight applications to the Civil Aviation Bureau (currently about several cases each year),
participating in flight and ground displays at the annual sky sports event, Sky Leisure Japan,
dispatching judges to the Birdman Rally (commonly known as the "Tori Ningen Contest") hosted by Yomiuri Telecasting Corporation in Osaka,
and conducting safety workshops for ultralight motorized aircraft, among other initiatives.
In 1971, our association hosted the 1st Fly-In at Onishi Airfield, which continued until the 3rd event before
being succeeded by the current Sky Leisure Japan (abbreviated as SLJ).
In 1977, Yomiuri Telecasting Corporation in Osaka hosted the 1st Birdman Rally at Lake Biwa.
This rally was also born from an idea by the late Chairman Miyahara, inspired by a fly-in
held at a lake in the United Kingdom. Since comparing records would be easier with similar flights,
regulations such as the current platform were established. This rally marked its 27th year in 2003 and has become well-established as a classic summer tradition.

Core Values That Drive Our Work
Guide to Membership
Guide to Membership
Explore Our Architectural Design Gallery
In principle, to become a member of EXAL, you must be someone who builds their own aircraft (or anything classified as an aircraft). However, you can also become a member if you wish to purchase an aircraft like a US Primary Category aircraft and fly it in Japan, so please feel free to consult with us. In order to fly as a pilot, you must, in principle, hold a license with the rating for the aircraft in question (airplane or rotorcraft). However, since there are some categories like gyrocopters for which no licensing system is established in Japan, there are exceptions depending on your experience.
Our mission is to design spaces that stand the test of time, enhancing the way people live, work, and interact with their environments.
