In the United States, amateur-built aircraft constructed for educational or recreational purposes
can receive a Special Airworthiness Certificate in the Experimental category and be flown under certain conditions.
While the buying and selling of the aircraft itself is not prohibited, there are restrictions on operations for compensation or hire.
On the other hand, in Japan, for amateur-built aircraft for which proving compliance with normal airworthiness certification standards is difficult,
a system is in place that allows flight under a "Permit for Test Flight, etc." which specifies the period, take-off and landing locations, flight airspace, and pilot.

Light-Sport Aircraft (LSA) is a category established by the US FAA in 2004 for small and lightweight aircraft. It utilizes ASTM standards to streamline certification, and includes categories such as S-LSA, which is certified as a completed aircraft, and E-LSA, which is classified as an experimental aircraft.
